Warrior Spotlight

Meet Phil and Caitlyn Stewart

This power couple hails Langhorne, PA as home. Caitlyn is an award winning kindergarten to second grade disability teacher and Phil is software tester. They are parents to two children. And now, they can add "OM Warriors" to their list of accomplishments.

Phil was diagnosed with ocular melanoma and treated in April 2016. That fall, he and Caitlyn decided to attend the Eye Am Not Alone conference in Miami, FL. Inspired by the conference, Phil attended Cancer Con as a melanoma representative. Both conferences provided valuable connections and friendships within the cancer community. Fuelled by the desire to do more and help others, Phil hosted a successful "Pirate Day!" fundraiser at his workplace in conjunction with National Eye Patch Day.

Caitlyn decided to throw a "surprise" 30th birthday party for Phil in the form of an upcoming OMF fundraiser this September. Caitlyn "surprised" Phil on Father's Day with the "Eye am 30!" fundraising plans she'd already put into action. "I knew Phil would want to help plan the event!" she explained.  The fundraiser is a Beef & Beer birthday dinner with raffle. (See the sidebar for additional information.) Caitlyn attributes their success to the incredible support from family, friends, and their community. The highlight of fundraising for the Stewarts has been the connections they've made.

Past Warrior Spotlights

"The true gift of organizing a fundraiser is all the connections we've made."

For anyone thinking of hosting a Warrior Event, Caitlyn's advice is, "Believe in yourself. You can do it!" While simply knowing where to start can be a big hurtle, she recommends turning to family and friends for ideas. "Don't be afraid to delegate or ask for help," she said. "You'll be surprised by how many people really do want to help."
