Tips on Traveling to Boston

Flying to Boston

We strongly recommend that those attending the 2010 Ocular Melanoma Scientific Working Group Symposium in Boston, MA, fly directly to Boston Logan International Airport. However, there are two other airports that are located about an hour from Boston and may offer cheaper flights but will require more expensive transportation to the hotel.

Boston Logan International Airport

Boston Logan Airport airport is a full-service airport with connecting flights thoughout the country. Boston Logan is serviced by Air Canada, American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, United and US Airways as well as several commuter lines. Ground Transportation from Boston Logan to the Inn at Longwood Medical

Public Transportation:
MBTA (this is the subway system in Boston) – Take the Blue Line Train Inbound to Government Center. Transfer to the Green "E" Line Heath Street to Longwood Med Area - walk a short distance SW on Huntington Ave, turn right on Longwood Ave, walk approx. 4 blocks NW on Longwood Ave to the hotel OR transfer to the Green "D" Line Riverside to Longwood Station - walk approx. 1 block SW on Chapel St, turn left on Longwood Ave, walk approx. 3 blocks E on Longwood Ave. to the hotel.; MBTA fee is $2. The MBTA website offers an online trip-planner useful for figuring out how to get here by subway, local bus, and train.

Taxi:
Taxis are always available. Estimated taxi fare is $40.00.

Rental Cars:
All the major rental car agencies operate at the airport. The rental car companies have their own complimentary shuttle buses to transport passengers to/from every terminal and the rental car facility. Shuttles run frequently and stop curbside on the arrival level for passengers to board.

Driving Directions from Boston Logan Airport to the Inn at Longwood Medical (about 6.5 miles):
Take Sumner Tunnel to I-93 North. Take Storrow Drive exit. Follow and take Fenway exit on left (Route 1, South). Follow the Fenway (Boylston Street-Riverway Outbound) through three sets of lights to Brookline Avenue. Bear left onto Brookline Avenue and continue through two sets of lights to Longwood Avenue. Turn left onto Longwood Avenye and the hotel is on the right.

Providence TF Green Airport is located in Providence, RI, about one hour south of Boston. Providence TF Green Airport is serviced by Air Canada, Continental, Delta, Southwest, United and US Airways. Visit their website for more information and to get a list of airlines, schedules, and prices.

Driving Directions from TF Green Airport: Take I-95 North towards Providence (crossing into Massachusetts), Take exit for MA-9 via Exit 20A toward Brookline/Boston. Turn left onto Brookline Ave. Turn right onto Longwood Ave. The hotel will be on your right.

Manchester Boston Regional Airport is located in Manchester, NH, about one hour north of Boston. Manchester Boston Regional Airport is serviced by Air Canada, Continental, Delta, Southwest, United and US Airways. Driving Directions from Manchester Boston Regional Airport: Follow signs for I-93 south. Exit onto Storrow Drive, West (Exit 26). Exit at Fenway (left exit); stay to left. Take the Boylston Street Outbound ramp toward Riverway. Take slight left onto Brookline Ave.Take left onto Longwood Ave. and the hotel is on the right.

Other Transportation to Boston

Train:
Amtrak has scheduled train service to Boston from New York and other points in the Northeast Corridor. The trip from New York City takes 3 1/2 hours on Acela Express trains, about 4 hours on other trains. Visit www.amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL for more information.

Amtrak has three Boston stops.
  • Rte. 128 is about 12 miles from downtown and is a good place to get off if you are visiting the western or southern suburbs.
  • Back Bay Station is in the Back Bay, convenient to hotels in the Back Bay and the South End and the Orange Line subway. This stop is most convenient to the Inn at Longwood Medical hotel.
  • The terminus is South Station, near the financial district and on the Red Line subway. It is convenient for the hotels along the waterfront and the theater district.

Bus:
Nationwide bus companies including Greyhound and Peter Pan stop downtown at South Station. Several regional bus companies offer scheduled service from Boston to New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York City. A good list of them can be found at www.bostonusa.com.

Rental Cars

Boston Logan Airport is serviced by all of the rental car agencies. Costs begin at around $50/day. Driving is not recommended in Boston and you should not need a car once you are at the hotel. However, a car provides a wonderful way to explore surrounding areas should you choose to take time to do so before or after the conference.

Getting Around Boston

Downtown Boston is known as the walking city and is relatively easy to navigate on foot. Tourist centers can provide walking maps and provide information on interesting and historical tours of the city.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is located in an area of Boston called Mission Hill.
